28th December
A Christmas like no other ...
Los Inocentes - Innocents Day
The 28th December is known as El día de Los Santos Inocentes or the Feast of the Holy Innocents.
There are many similarities between this day in Spain and April Fools Day as it is a day when practical jokes are carried out.
Often the press and television will stage an elaborate hoax, and in some villages the children light bonfires and one luck Spanish child is appointed as mayor for the day. The pseudo mayor then instructs all the villagers to perform chores such as washing the streets or picking up litter. Those who disobey the mayor are forced to pay a small fine which contributes towards the Christmas celebrations.
So look out on this day and if you catch a joker playing a trick on you shout 'Inocente!'
